Why Is My Transmission Slipping? Causes and Fixes for Redding Drivers

Catch Transmission Trouble Before It Gets Worse

Shifting problems don't always mean a new transmission. Fluid, software, and sensor problems cause many of them, and they're much cheaper to fix early.

Shifts feel off: book soon and drive gently. Won't go into gear, slips badly, or smells burnt: stop driving and call us.

Why is my transmission slipping? The most common causes are low, old, or burnt transmission fluid, a fluid leak, faulty solenoids or sensors, and worn internal clutches. Many shifting problems are fluid or electrical, so a slipping transmission doesn't always need replacing.

A slipping transmission feels like the engine revs up but the car doesn't accelerate to match. Other warning signs are harsh or late shifts, a delay when you put it in drive or reverse, a whine or clunk, or a burning smell.

Common causes of transmission problems

  • Low, old, or burnt fluid. The first thing to check, and often the cheapest fix. Fluid service
  • A leak. Red fluid under the car points here; see fluid leaking under the car.
  • Faulty solenoids, sensors, or software. Modern automatics are computer-controlled, and many shift problems are electrical. Transmission repair
  • Worn internal clutches or bands. More likely on high-mileage transmissions or ones that tow.
  • A worn clutch on a manual transmission. See clutch slipping. Clutch repair

Is it safe to keep driving?

Common questions

Why Is My Transmission Slipping?

The most common causes are low, old, or burnt transmission fluid, a fluid leak, faulty solenoids or sensors, and worn internal clutches. Many shifting problems are fluid or electrical, so a slipping transmission doesn't always need replacing.

What does transmission slipping feel like?

The engine revs higher but the car doesn't speed up the way it should, or it seems to change gears on its own.

Can low fluid cause shifting problems?

Yes. Low or burnt fluid is one of the most common causes, and checking it is the first step.

Do I need a new transmission?

Not necessarily. Many shifting problems are fluid, sensor, or software related. We diagnose it before recommending a replacement.
