Why Is My Car Squealing Under the Hood? Causes and Fixes for Redding Drivers

Replace a Squealing Belt Before It Snaps

A squeal from the engine bay is usually the serpentine belt slipping. When that belt breaks, you lose charging, power steering, and often engine cooling at once.

Book soon: a squealing belt is close to failing. If the battery light or temperature gauge comes on, stop driving.

Why is my car squealing under the hood? Almost always a belt slipping on its pulleys. A worn or glazed serpentine belt is the most common cause, followed by a weak tensioner, a failing pulley, fluid on the belt, or a struggling power steering pump.

A loud squeal when you start the car, turn the wheel, or switch on the A/C almost always comes from a belt slipping on its pulleys. On most cars a single serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering, A/C, and often the water pump.

Common causes of squealing under the hood

  • A worn, cracked, or glazed serpentine belt. The most common cause. Serpentine belt replacement
  • A weak belt tensioner. The belt can't stay tight, even if it's new.
  • A failing pulley or bearing. Idler pulleys, the alternator, or the water pump.
  • Fluid on the belt. An oil or coolant leak can make the belt slip. Belt and hose replacement
  • A struggling power steering pump. The squeal gets louder when turning. Power steering service

Hearing a squeal on startup?

Book a belt inspection before it snaps and takes your charging and cooling with it.

How we find the cause and fix it

  1. We inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, and fraying.
  2. We check the tensioner and every pulley for wear and noise.
  3. We look for leaks that could contaminate the new belt.
  4. We replace what's worn with parts that fit your vehicle, and give you an estimate first.

Quiet it down for good.

Book a belt and tensioner replacement with an estimate first.

Is it safe to keep driving?

Book soon. A squealing belt is a warning, and when a serpentine belt breaks, the battery stops charging and the engine can overheat. If the battery light or temperature gauge comes on, stop driving. See also dim or flickering lights.

Common questions

Why Is My Car Squealing Under the Hood?

Almost always a belt slipping on its pulleys. A worn or glazed serpentine belt is the most common cause, followed by a weak tensioner, a failing pulley, fluid on the belt, or a struggling power steering pump.

Why does my car squeal when I start it?

Usually a worn serpentine belt or weak tensioner that slips until the belt warms up.

Can I drive with a squealing belt?

For a short time, but get it checked. If the belt breaks, you can lose charging, power steering, and engine cooling.

How often should the serpentine belt be replaced?

Many last 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but heat and age matter too. We check it at every inspection.
