Shocktober: Does Your Car Sound Like A Haunted Hayride?

By Andrew · October 19, 2026

October is the month for creaks in the attic, things that go bump in the night, and haunted hayrides. Those are fun at a Halloween party. They're a lot less fun when they're coming from your car.

If your ride has started clunking over bumps, creaking in driveways, or bouncing down the road like a ghost is at the wheel, your shocks may be worn out. And with Halloween night bringing more kids and families onto Redding streets than any other evening of the year, it's a good time to make sure your car can stop and steer the way it should.

Our Shocktober special: Buy 3 Shocks, Get 1 Free

All month long, when you buy three shocks, the fourth one is free. The first 10 customers who respond and mention the ad also get a free wheel alignment, which is the perfect way to finish off a suspension job and protect your tires.

The offer ends October 31, 2026, so call this week to get on the schedule. See the full Shocktober details for terms.

6 Spooky Signs Your Shocks Need Attention

1. The haunted hayride bounce. Shocks control how much your car's springs bounce after a bump. When they wear out, the car keeps bobbing up and down long after the bump is gone. A floaty, boat-like ride on the freeway is a classic sign.

2. Things that go clunk in the night. A knocking or clunking sound over bumps, potholes, or driveway dips can mean worn shocks, broken mounts, or loose steering and suspension parts like sway bar links or ball joints.

3. The nose-dive. If the front of your car dips sharply when you brake, worn front shocks are likely letting the weight shift forward. That shift makes the car take longer to stop.

4. Creepy creaks and squeaks. Creaking when you turn into a driveway or go over speed bumps often points to dry or worn bushings, mounts, or ball joints.

5. Mysterious leaks and cursed tires. Oily fluid on the outside of a shock means it's leaking and losing its ability to dampen. Worn shocks can also cause cupping, a scalloped pattern of uneven wear on your tires that makes a rhythmic humming noise.

Worn Shocks Are Scarier Than They Sound

Shocks aren't just about comfort. They keep your tires pressed firmly against the road. When they're worn, your tires bounce and lose contact for split seconds at a time, which means:

  • Longer stopping distances, especially on bumpy or wet pavement.
  • Less control in sudden swerves and emergency maneuvers.
  • Faster tire wear, so you end up replacing tires sooner.
  • More wear on other parts, like ball joints, tie rods, and mounts.

Most shocks and struts wear gradually, so it's easy to get used to the change. If your car has more than about 50,000 miles on its original shocks, it's worth having them checked. Learn more about our shocks and struts service.

Why finish with an alignment?

Replacing shocks and other suspension parts can change your wheel angles. A wheel alignment afterward makes sure the car tracks straight and your tires wear evenly. That's why the free alignment for the first 10 customers is such a good deal.

Driving safely on Halloween night

Halloween is supposed to be a night of excitement and fun memories. Excited trick-or-treaters dart between parked cars, costumes are dark, and masks block their view. A few simple habits make a big difference in the safety of the kids out having fun:

  • Slow down in neighborhoods, and drive well under the speed limit between 5 and 9 p.m.
  • Turn your headlights on early, even before sunset, so kids can see you coming.
  • Watch for kids crossing mid-block or stepping out from between parked cars.
  • Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully.
  • Put the phone away. Every second of attention counts.
  • Plan a sober ride if you're celebrating.

Before the big night, make sure every headlight, brake light, and turn signal works, and that your brakes are in good shape. If your headlights are dim or hazy, we can restore or replace your car lights.
